Seeing is Believing; Free Eye Tests at Bishopstown Costcutter
Football Legends support Campaign
Free eye tests were made available for over 55s at O’Brien’s Costcutter/Amber forecourt on the Bandon Road in Bishopstown last Thursday 28 September.
The health initiative is part of a campaign by the Fighting Blindness charity to tackle age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness for those aged over 50 in Ireland.
A mobile testing van was on the Costcutter forecourt between 10.00am and 6.00pm on September 28th.
Irish football legend Ronnie Whelan and Danny O’Carroll of Mrs Brown’s Boys were supporting the AMD Awareness Week campaign. Jim Barry, Barry Group Managing Director, is also backing this important healthcare initiative.
Over 7,000 new cases of age-related macular degeneration are diagnosed every year in Ireland, often at a stage when damage has already been caused to vision. Early diagnosis is important to allow for treatment and prevent further deterioration.
Anthony O’Brien of Costcutter in Bishopstown says the busy forecourt is a popular local stop, and that the Costcutter team is spreading the word about the eye testing campaign.
“Bringing free testing to the over 55s in their local community is a great initiative and we’re delighted to support this important awareness campaign”, the local store owner said.
The large forecourt site is established as a hub of the Bishopstown community and is an essential stop for commuters on the busy Bandon Road. The state-of-the-art service station, recently named Forecourt of the Year in the Costcutter National Awards, offers fuel, a café, bakery, a full off-licence, deli, fresh foods and grocery, as well as ample parking and car wash facilities.
Costcutter is one of Ireland’s fastest growing retail groups of recent years. There are now over 125 locally owned stores in communities countrywide, with the retail brand serviced by the Mallow-based Barry Group.
At the announcement of the new Fighting Blindness campaign, Jim Barry of the Barry Group said that local retailers like Anthony and Michelle O’Brien are consistently customer focussed.
“Local store owners like the O’Brien’s put the community and their customers first, as their support for National AMD Week shows, and this dedication is evident right throughout this award-winning store”, the retail boss said.
